Set expectations for English practice
Ask students to attempt every activity in English using their own words. Encourage them to read lesson texts and questions in English, listen to the English audio, and give their own answers in Speak, Write, and Discuss. Explain that translating whole passages, questions, or answers with a browser translator, translation app, or AI tool reduces the English practice they get.
Let students know that their English does not need to be perfect. Their own attempts help teachers see where they need support. Agree with your teachers which forms of language support are permitted, and communicate this clearly to students.
Help students when they get stuck
- Ask them to reread the sentence or replay the audio and look for clues in the surrounding context.
- Encourage them to explain their ideas with simpler English and words they already know.
- Allow built-in vocabulary help where appropriate, then ask them to return to the activity in English.
- Invite them to ask their teacher for help rather than machine-translating a whole task or answer.
Ask teachers to share the student guide Using Eigo.AI in English before students begin. It explains these strategies and how to deal with a translation warning.
Choose the language support your institution can use
Students can normally choose a language for vocabulary help and new Write/Discuss feedback. This does not translate lesson texts, questions, or all exercises.
If you want that support to stay in English, open Institution → Options → Students, uncheck Allow students to select the feedback and definitions language, and save. Follow the Student Options section of Institutional options. For an individual class, see How to override institutional options for specified classes.
Automatic translation detection and prevention
Eigo.AI automatically checks for Google Translate page translation on Study pages. When detected, a warning replaces the study area and asks the student to turn translation off. This check is always active; you do not need to enable it, and it is separate from the feedback and definitions language option.
Ask the student to:
- Use their browser’s translation controls to show the original English page or turn off translation for Eigo.AI.
- Turn off automatic translation for the site if their browser has it enabled.
- Reload the Study page to restore the activities.
- If the warning continues, disable translation extensions and reopen the page.
Keep reinforcing English use
The automatic check detects Google Translate page translation. It cannot prevent every translation extension, external translation tool, or translation on another device. Continue to explain the purpose of English practice, agree on permitted support with teachers and students, and encourage students to ask for help.
